On-Call Superstitions

I'm in the middle of my first weekend on-call. It's strangely scheduled due to the holiday. On Friday night, off New Year's Day, back on for Sunday and then Monday, which is the observed holiday. Let's just say I can't wait for 8 am Tuesday morning!

I realized I have a few things that I will or will not do while on-call, as if these things can improve my odds.

I don't make plans. I hate leaving things early and I'm always paranoid I won't hear the pager.

I don't light candles when I'm at home.

I don't make any meals that involve lots of preparation. Quick and easy is the name of the game.

I will often wear more office-appropriate attire while I'm home. If I'm ready to go, then I won't be called? It doesn't seem to make any difference but in my mind.

I try to catch up on things around the house. Cleaning, picking things up, laundry.

If I'm able to make it to church, I sit in the back at the end of the row. Just in case.

I thank God for every hour, or half hour, that I do not get paged. It helps me keep a more peaceful spirit. If I do get paged, I start praying for wisdom and strength!

What are your on-call superstitions?

I have no superstitions so to speak, but I do often find myself waking up through the night with the phone in my hand - thinking didn I miss a call? did I go back to sleep after I got a call? oh no!!!!
I don't make plans though, and have clothes set up ready for "just in case" all the while praying no!!!!!!!!!
maybe one day I'll get used to it?

I don't have any superstitions about call, but I do use is as an opportunity/excuse to make sure that I get plenty of rest. I try to be extra nice to myself and go to bed early. Then whenever the phone rings, and it is not the answering service, I usually say to the caller, "Oh, thank goodnes it's you". My enthusiasm usually surprises the caller, who may not realize, that I am expecting calls from the answering service.

I only have one on-call superstition. When on call you don't talk about being on call.

I do similar things as you, no plans, be prepared but still dread the whole waiting for the phone to ring feeling and what the heck is it going to entail. I try to reassure myself that no matter what it is, it will work itself out if I just surrender the situation. After having a very crazy on-call night during the full moon I've come to rate all other callings to that night which involved a PCG running down the street wailing and a dementia pt that was out driving recklessly looking for their cats! Yeah that was a fun night! ;)

I pray for wisdom and strength every single morning before I see any clients. I know I can't do it without Him.
